BMW has invested in a company called Alitheon (Bellevue, WA) that has pioneered an optical AI system that can identify any individual part and verify its authenticity, determine place and time of origin, detect signs of tampering, and measure wear.
The technology can match a picture that someone has taken of the product in question with the physical attributes of the corresponding product that comes from the manufacturing process, using cloud computing databases.
This type of authentication can be performed in milliseconds at industrial production speeds without human involvement – and can be integrated at any step throughout manufacturing and distribution. It can also be performed by anyone with a smartphone and the Alitheon app.
